100 Ways to Take Better Black & White Photographs
Overview
The last book I reviewed, Creative Black and White: Digital Photography Tips and Techniques, did a superb job of covering all aspects of black and white photography. The book I’m highlighting here, 100 Ways to Take Better Black and White Photographs, concentrates more on the where, when, and how to take better black and white photos. In it, author Michael Milton presents one hundred ways to improve your black and white photography without resorting to Photoshop. I believe the majority of his pointers are good tips for photography in general though, not just for black and white.
The book divides the subject matter into the following nine general areas (click here to see Google Books excerpts):
- Camera Technique
- Lenses and Accessories
- Composition
- Understanding Light
- Landscape
- Abstracts and Still Life
- Architecture
- People
- Travel
Book Pros
- very well written and an easy read
- good, overall, practical photography advice
- author’s own unique photo for each point made
- advice about how to take better photos versus how to make better photos via Photoshop
Book Cons
- photos exclusively 35mm film, making the book a bit dated
- photos above average yet not stellar
- though some may like the look, photos too grainy for my personal taste
Recommendation
This book appears to target beginners through advanced amateur photographers with a nice collection of photography tips useful for more than just black and white. The emphasis on film, however, which may have been appropriate when it was first published (October 2005), takes away from the book’s appeal, since there are few film adherents now. On a scale of one to five, I’d give the book a four overall.
Is it worth purchasing? That all depends on what you’re looking for, of course. The book contains some very good and useful information, but I don’t believe it’s worth buying new from Amazon directly. If you’re interested in the book, try picking up a new or used copy from one of the other sellers on Amazon’s site. The book is available at some good prices, which would make it worthwhile purchasing.
