Inspirational Photographers: Paul Marcellini

Wow! That was my reaction when I first came across Paul Marcellini’s work. I believe what caught my eye initially was the lighting, which has a very pleasing quality reminiscent of paintings I’ve seen. So it wasn’t a surprise to learn that Paul painted during his high school years. He only switched to photography during college because he decided that “photography would be easier than painting while in a dorm.” That transition occurred in the summer of 2005 when Paul bought his first DSLR.
Today Paul Marcellini is a naturalist who works for the Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation. He had a deep affinity for the Florida Everglades having grown up there, and spends a fair amount of time there photographing. In addition, Paul gives guided private tours of the Everglades to teach photography or just to view its “hidden beauty.” As he states on his site:
“It is my desire to show the beauty of the Everglades through my photography and raise awareness of such a vital and precious ecosystem. The outdoors is my escape and I hope to capture images that display my passion for the outdoors.”
Maybe part of the reason I found Paul’s South Florida images so inspirational has to do with the 170+ inches of snow our area has gotten so far this winter. Though many may find snowy images quaint or picturesque, take my word for it, the “quaintness” wears off after the first 100 inches. So I’ve spent time lately gazing at Paul’s photography, soaking up the virtual light, and wishing I were in Florida.
